Can I deduct any wedding expenses on my tax return?

April 15, 2009

quarterly-taxesSo you’ve (hopefully!!!) completed your taxes and are vowing to be more organized for next year. Meanwhile you’re planning your wedding and as the expenses add up, you might be wondering if it’s possible to deduct any of your wedding expenses on your tax return for next year. The answer? Maybe.

First and foremost, always consult a professional accountant!

Ways you may be able to deduct wedding expenses from your taxes:

  1. The Venue. If you are renting space from a non-profit for your ceremony or reception, the rental fee may be considered a donation to that facility, in which case it is eligible to be a deduction. Always double check with both your account and the facility. Museums and other historic properties are often registered non-profits.
  2. The Favors. A popular trend in wedding favors is to give a donation to a charity in lieu of a tangible favor. Any donation made to a registered non-profit can be listed on your tax return.
  3. The flowers. After the wedding, what exactly do you do with all of the beautiful and still in perfectly good condition centerpieces? Some choose to gift them to guests, but you may also want to consider gathering them to take to a nursing home or hospital to gift to the residents or patients. This may also be considered a donation that may be listed as a deduction. Again, check with your accountant.

In case I haven’t said it enough already: always check with a professional accountant before deducing any wedding expense, even if it falls into the categories above.

Happy tax day and happy planning!
